The Pink Panther Cartoon Collection: Volume 5 [Blu-ray]
In this next-to-last phase of the Pink Panther's amazing run of new theatrical short-subjects, newsworthy mid-to-late 1970s trends and fads such as Rock'em-Sock'em robots (PINK ARCADE), compulsive dieting (DIETETIC PINK), and the merchandizing of "pet rocks" (Art Leonardi's ROCKY PINK) come into focus. Fairy-tale spoofs (PINK PIPER, CAT AND THE BEANSTALK) make a modest comeback, but much more impressive are brand-new wrinkles on familiar Panther themes like sleep deprivation (Art Davis's PINK TRUMPET), wars against a pesky fly (turning positively apocalyptic in Sid Marcus's PINK S.W.A.T.) and journeys through surreality (SHERLOCK PINK, Robert McKimson's last and probably best "Panther" pic). Special Features:-NEW Audio commentaries for selected films, by author Mark Arnold, historian Jerry Beck, filmmaker Greg Ford and cartoon writer William Hohauser -Think Pink - How to Draw Pink Panther with Art Leonardi (4:14) -Animated Main Titles For All 8 Blake Edward Pink Panther Films (9:00)
Pink Flamingos: 25th Anniversary Edition
Director John Waters breaks every rule of good filmmaking and good taste with his 1972 landmark cult classic, Pink Flamingos. Starring Divine, Mink Stole and Edith Massey (an ensemble cast like you wouldn’t believe), this underground epic sets a benchmark for the bizarre that has never been equaled.Divine, whose star is so big she can hardly fit in the role, is Babs Johnson, a trailer park bon vivant who proudly claims the title “The Filthiest Person Alive.” She’s the envy of every neighborhood degenerate and it isn’t long before another couple sets their sights on Divine’s legacy, in the proud American tradition, competition forces each contender to outdo the other. Just released from a mental hospital, Charles Dreyfus (Herbert Lom) intends to off Inspector Clouseau (Peter Sellers), a former underling whose blundering drove the lawman around the bend. Dreyfus captures a scientist, ordering him to create a weapon that will destroy the planet, and threatens world leaders with annihilation unless they hand over his nemesis. Meanwhile, Clouseau goes to England to look for the vanished scientist, and his obliviousness turns out to be an asset.
Pink-Slipped: What Happened to Women in the Silent Film Industries? (Women and Film History International)
Women held more positions of power in the silent film era than at any other time in American motion picture history. Marion Leonard broke from acting to cofound a feature film company. Gene Gauntier, the face of Kalem Films, also wrote the first script of Ben-Hur. Helen Holmes choreographed her own breathtaking on-camera stunt work. Yet they and the other pioneering filmmaking women vanished from memory. Using individual careers as a point of departure, Jane M. Gaines charts how women first fell out of the limelight and then out of the film history itself. A more perplexing event cemented their obscurity: the failure of 1970s feminist historiography to rediscover them. Gaines examines how it happened against a backdrop of feminist theory and her own meditation on the limits that historiography imposes on scholars. Pondering how silent era women have become absent in the abstract while present in reality, Gaines sees a need for a theory of these artists' pasts that relates their aspirations to those of contemporary women. A bold journey through history and memory, Pink-Slipped pursues the still-elusive fate of the influential women in the early years of film.
